What is a root canal?

A root canal is a dental procedure that treats infection at the center of a tooth, also known as the root canal system. This procedure is necessary when the pulp inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels becomes infected due to decay or injury. The treatment consists of removing the infected or damaged pulp, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth, and then filling and sealing it to prevent further infection. Root canal treatment is a way to save a tooth that might otherwise have to be removed, preserving your natural smile and preventing any further oral health issues.

How is root canal treatment performed?

Root canal treatment typically involves several steps:

• Diagnosis: X-rays are taken to assess the extent of the infection.
• Anesthesia/sedation: The area around the tooth is numbed to ensure comfort during the procedure or we will use sedation to ensure your comfort.
• Pulpectomy: An opening is made in the tooth’s crown to access the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed, and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
• Filling: The cleaned root canal is filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, and sealed with dental cement to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
• Crown/cap: In most cases, a tooth with root canal treatment will need a crown to protect it from fracture and restore its function.

How long does the pain from a root canal last?

It’s normal to experience some discomfort or mild pain for a few days following a root canal treatment as it starts to heal. This discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients report that the pain diminishes significantly within a week.
